For Today...June 14, 2010

Outside my window...It's cloudy and rainy today. Those are same first five words from last week's weather...:) No storms though, just summer showers. =)

I am thinking...how much we enjoyed Selina's (Amanda's friend:) Senior flute recital last Wednesday night! Selina is amazingly talented and makes every song look so easy to play-- and they were not!! She is a beautiful young lady--inside and out. Her brother played a wonderful duet with her also. One talented family!
Amanda and Evan joined her on stage for a few songs from Archie- their band. I hope no one got hit in the eye with flying buttons- from we parents and their siblings "bustin' some buttons" as they sang and played several songs they had written as well as some great "covers". :) It was their first time in front of a large audience -from 50-70 people--and they were fantastic. (in this mother's humble opinion;)
Also Jonathan came home from Milwaukee for the concert and work related things- and Tim and Brooke came-- and then we had pizza and frozen yogurt back at home afterward.

I am thankful for...summertime! I have always loved the summer -- when school is out and schedules change- the warm weather, flowers and the green grass, vacations. Just love it!:)

From the kitchen... lasagna- if there is still some mozzarella cheese left:) and a green salad.

I am wearing...red shirt, blue capris.

I am hoping...make some headway on our bedroom organization and some redoing. Got some changes in mind:)

I am hearing... rain on the streets as cars go by, birds chirping ( love it:), a song on youtube that I am playing as I write this.

I am remembering...when we were growing up, how fun it was for our family to go to our aunt and uncle's house to spend the night! That was a big outing for us! And fun with the cousins! Good times!:)

I am praying... for all the gulf coast people and businesses who are affected by the oil leak and that an answer to how to stop it and then clean up comes quickly.
And continuing to pray for my mom's healing from her surgery.

Around the house... Hubby was able to pick up several office chairs ( replacing some old ones here) at a silent auction where he works. The bids started at $1 and each went for under $5- they are like new- they had ALOT to sell after combining some office spaces. We also replaced our tv in the bedroom for $13.50 from the auction! I know! It's a twin to the one we had, but bigger, so we knew what we were getting. It doesn't have all the fancy new pixel this and HD that, but it works great!

On my mind...how good God is...and how I need those new mercies every morning.

One of my favorite things... vintage tablecloths. I have seen a few on several blogs lately and they remind me of some that we grew up with on our table. Does that make me vintage too? I guess so...:)

For Today...June 8, 2010

Outside my window...It's cloudy and rainy today. We've had some beautiful mild weather lately, with a little rain here and there. Makes things grow!:) -especially the grass...keeps hubby busy mowing.

I am thinking...how we will enjoy Amanda's friend, Selina's senior flute recital on Wednesday evening. Selina is an amazingly talented flutist ( one of the top in our state!:)- who also blesses her church with her talent on the worship team. She, Amanda and another friend Evan, have formed a band (called Archie) and they will also be performing with Selina at her recital.
Selina is attending college on a full scholarship starting in the fall, and majoring in music therapy. Congratulations Selina!!:)


I am thankful for...that my mom is home from the hospital, recovering nicely from her surgery. And that my brother, Loyd, is able to stay with her. What a blessing!

From the kitchen... For dinner, bar-b-qued chicken leg quarters, mashed potatoes, green beans.

I am wearing...still in my jammies:)

I am hoping...to get the fridge cleaned out today- why to I hate that job? But I love the clean, sparkling fridge when it done!!

I am hearing... water splashing on the streets as cars go by-- the birds are quiet this morning- busy trying to stay dry I guess... I can hear Amanda moving around in the kitchen- is that coffee I smell?...mmmm...

I am remembering...our kids' graduations and parties, and how blessed we are as their parents.

I am praying... for my mom's continued good healing from surgery and that she will be able to get out and enjoy her garden this summer.

Around the house... Selina is spending nights with us for the next two or so weeks. Her grandparents just arrived from England for her graduation- ( her mom and dad's love story is a good one!--they met in California- she from England, he from America- fell in love and got married--and eventually were called to Wisconsin to the ministry- an inspiring testimony of faith!) Anyway, Selina gave her bedroom to her grandparents for their stay. She hasn't seen them in five years. We are happy to have her stay with us each night. Amanda has done the same thing and stayed overnight at Selina's, when she gave her room over for family guests here.:) Aren't special girlfriends great:!:)

On my mind...that I am glad we are done with high school graduations in our immediate family. We have had six and they were very fun, but I won't miss the stress of planning, shopping and set up of the parties. The first one ( in 1994:) was right after the graduation ceremony. The food was served inside with seating outside at night--and it got really chilly. The other five were held the day after graduation on Saturdays. We rented a tent for seating, and served food from our screened tent. It was nice having a large family who all worked together for setup, tear down and clean up:) Lots of work, but wonderful memories!:)

One of my favorite things... fried chicken...yeah, I know- not healthy- and we hardly ever indulge, but KFC is right up there with my mom's fried chicken recipe as my favorite.

A few plans for the rest of the week... going through clothes and giving ones away those that I don't wear.

For Today...May 25, 2010

Outside my window...The sun is shining now after thunder and rain earlier this morning. Several loud sounds of rolling thunder woke me this morning. We have had unseasonably hot weather for Wisconsin since Sunday- in the 90's. But the temps are forecast to go down a little each day this week - then a beautiful weekend in the 70's to come-- that's more like it!

I am thinking...of my mom who had surgery yesterday evening (because she told her doctor that she didn't want to wait until today!- Way to go Mom!:) . She has been in the hospital since Friday night-- going in with abdominal pain and nausea. Tests revealed on Monday that part of her small intestine had prolapsed through a hernia- and that is what the surgery fixed. She will be in ICU for the next two days for close observation because of her age-- she is 82- and going strong. But this will be a long summer of recuperating for her.

I am thankful for...for the beautiful flowers blooming all around.

From the kitchen... I am trying to use up food in the fridge freezer that have been there for a while-- that bag of shrimp sounds interesting- maybe with some stir-fry.

I am wearing...tan capris and red top.

I am hoping...to get still to get started soon on painting the railings on the deck. Last week the rain threw off those plans- but this week the temps are so hot- so we will see. I hate sweating!:)

I am hearing... the red-winged black bird that lives around here. He has more of a shrill whistle than a chirp-- and he bullies the other birds away from the feeder--needs to learn better sharing skills!

I am remembering...the great feeling you get as a kid on the last day of school-- schools are starting to get out for the summer- although our district goes two more weeks after this. Amanda and Jonathan are done with their classes at college for this year. So, to me it feels like school is out:)


I am praying...of course for my mom- for her quick recovery from surgery and that the pain level of her recovering would be low.

Around the house... Cleaning out some drawers and cabinets in the kitchen today.

On my mind...how God is working in the lives of Tim and Brooke and how He is going ahead of them in their preparations to move to Grand Rapids, MI in August. They have been called to help minister in the same community that Brooke lived and ministered in when they met. We will sure miss them here, but when your children are in the hands and will of God and answer "send me" to where he is calling them to go--the only thing to do is stand behind them and say amen. Sure, tears are allowed, always...and smiles...only 6 hours away, right?:)

I don't think I have mentioned that our nephew, Dr. Karl H., just graduated from medical school in Indianapolis two weeks ago! That is a huge accomplishment! He and his new bride, Emily,
are moving to Grand Rapids, MI for his residency at a hospital there. We attended their wedding last January. So nice to know that Tim will have relatives nearby there in Grand Rapids. And congrats to Karl's sweet mom, Leigh (Lon's sister:)- she is such a great momto her boys!

One of my favorite things... sweet iced tea with lemon :)

A few plans for the rest of the week...regular household stuff- buying graduation cards and putting some in the mail to college grads.

For Today...May 17, 2010

Outside my window...Beautiful sunshine this morning!! Last week was a long dreary week with clouds and/or rain each day. I have to admit, it was getting to me. To make up for it, I probably wasted some electricity just to have a few extra lights on.

I am thinking... and praying for my husband's family who are mourning his uncle Bob, who passed away last week after a fall and broken hip. He was 87 and will be missed. I am praying for his dear wife, Jean, who is also 87, and two daughters and family. Lon is driving down to Missouri today.

I am thankful for...Amanda has just completed her first year of college. I am so thankful that she is living at home these first two years of college. We still get to enjoy her activity and friends. Keeps us young:)

From the kitchen... I have been craving our grocery store's rotisserie chicken and I spied a coupon for this week! So we will have chicken and big green salad with ranch dressing for dinner. I have also been thinking about a jello poke cake. Remember those? I have made the pudding poke cake over the years, but never the strawberry jello kind with whipped cream on top. With sugar-free jello and low fat cool whip...hmmm. Sounds refreshing.:)

I am wearing...still hanging out in my jammies. :)

I am hoping...to get started soon on painting the railings on the deck. That didn't get done last fall... and I hope to order a neat addition for the birds and flowers on the deck this year. Can't wait to get it and show you!:)

I am hearing...morning traffic and birds chirping.

I am remembering...the fun times we had with Uncle Bob over the years at holidays and at family events. He will be missed.

I am praying...for Jonathan as he has three finals this week as he finishes up his fourth year of college. He's on the five year plan and working hard. We are so proud of him!
And safety for Lon and other family who will be traveling for the funeral in Missouri.

Around the house...Several projects going on around the house--kitchen, home office, and living room. Some rearranging and organizing. Also, I know how the scanner operational!!--So will be starting to scan older photos in the computer! :)

On my mind...the moving that I watched last night, Facing Giants. We've had this dvd for a long time and I've never watched it. If you haven't seen this, find it and watch it. It brought me to tears several times-(ok, I'm a little hormonal, but it was very touching and inspiring:) Here is a link if you're interested.

When I would hear that song, it would remind me, as a parent, that those little ones are always watching and listening --

For Today... April 13, 2010

Outside my window...We had some sunshine earlier this morning, but the clouds have come in for rain that is in the forecast later this afternoon. The rest of the week looks good with a lot of sunshine (just a little rain:) and temps in the mid 60's to mid 70's. Our grass needs mowing already. Unusual for here this early into Spring.

I am thinking... of the wonderful time on Easter Sunday we had with Daniel, Jess and the boys and Nathan and Kristen and Amanda. There were only eight of us around the table. We are not used to having so much "elbow room" when our family gets together:). Tim and Brooke were able to travel to celebrate Easter weekend with her family. She has a beautiful new 5-6 month old niece, by the way! And I hear they got to see lots of friends there. Jonathan was not able to make it home because of his work schedule. Miss you Jonathan!! Jonathan is working hard at college and his job- we are very proud of him!:) We wanted to Skype with Ben, Lisa and Sophia in Pittsburgh, but our schedules didn't work out for it that day- did talk to them on the phone!

I am thankful for... the time we got to spend with my mom and sister and her family last week! They arrived on Monday for their Spring break, and went home on Thursday. Unfortunately, Wisconsin doesn't always accommodate with sunny, warm weather consistently this time of year. We keep winter coats at the ready and are hesitant to head out some days in just a jacket...never know how the day will end.:/ The week before (for Amanda's break) was mostly beautiful and even hit 80 degrees. Last week, it was in the 50's and 60's and rained most of the week. So we had a lot of inside time together.:) Isaac (8), Hannah (6)and Sophia (2) kept us entertained!:)

From the kitchen... Using the ham bone and ham left from Easter for ham and beans for dinner. And I think, making some yeast bread in the bread maker.

I am wearing...blue pants and tan top--comfy.

I am hoping...organize our closet and get some clothes packed up for goodwill.

I am hearing...birds chirping outside--- as I was loading the dishwasher this morning, I was watching a mourning dove land on the deck railing with dried grass in it's mouth. It would then fly into the tall overgrown bush by the window. It has been making trips over to the neighbor's yard for the grass and coming back to build it's nest all morning! I can tell we won't be trimming that bush back for awhile! Can't wait to see how many babies they have!:)
One time, the dove noticed me watching it, and dropped the grass out of it's mouth- intentionally, or not, I'm not sure--- but I imagined it saying," Nest, what nest? I'm not building a nest, no not me, not here!":)

I am remembering...years ago when the kids and I were outside playing badminton in the back yard. There was a bird chirping wildly at us from our border shrubs nearby. Then it began flying away and around us like it was trying to get our attention. It even tried to attack the shuttlecock- which is what you hit up in the air and over the net. It's funny- we grew up calling that a "birdie"! And now here was this bird attacking our birdie! I came to realize that this bird was probably chattering at us and flying wildly to draw our attention away from it's nest in those shrubs where it's eggs or babies were.

I am praying...my dear friend's SIL who has just been diagnosed with cervical cancer. I hear she is a dynamic Christian woman.

Around the house...cleaning and closet projects --along with getting flower seeds planted inside with Amanda for trans-planting in our deck pots later. A way to save money:)

On my mind...thinking of our time with Sam and Eli on Easter Sunday. Eli is getting so aware of things and people around him. He has some stranger anxiety that little ones often go through, so I just held him a little bit, before he cried for his daddy:) But he smiles so big and is such a happy little boy-- made his papaw and grammy smile a lot, too!!:)
For dessert that day, I made a layered white cake with sprinkles on the icing and a little ceramic bunny on top. It's become a tradition and we called our "bunny cake".When it was time for dessert, as Sam climbed up on the chair beside me, he said, "Grammy, I WUV bunny cake!":)


One of my favorite things... hearing someone mowing outside - a true sign of Spring.

For Today... February 8, 2010

Outside my window...We had more snow overnight- a surprise this morning. Still waiting for more starting this evening, overnight, and all day Tuesday... could be up to 9-10 inches before it stops. It one of those slow moving fronts ( see, I can talk "weather channel":) that just stays around and drops snow. And then it is suppose to blow and drift. Jimmy the Groundhog forgot to mention that there can be a lot of cold weather and snow before an "early Spring" around here;)

I am thinking... that I have faith in all of the Illinois and Wisconsin snow removal guys and their equipment to get all the snow out of the way for my sister, her husband and family who plan to drive up from Illinois Thursday evening. You can do it guys!!

I am thankful for... Amanda, who helps so much around here. Being the last kid standing since her five siblings flew the coup, is such a different lifestyle than when the place was hoppin':) Last week she shoveled the driveway (without being asked or saying a word afterward), when her dad had to work late for several evenings. Along with her college schedule, she is a big help with things around the house. Thanks Amanda!

From the kitchen... Oatmeal, juice and coffee...mmmm... Oh, you mean for dinner?-- no idea yet:)

I am wearing...yup, still in my jammies and robe. ( I rarely have to change that line;)

I am hoping...to get together a menu and grocery list and making a few things ahead for the weekend. First, I need to talk to Melissa as to likes and dislikes of foods for her family again.

I am hearing...the tv in the other room, the squeaky brakes of a car at the stop sign at the end of our street.

I am remembering...what a wonderful wedding weekend we had in Indianapolis a week ago. I have to wait to get some pictures from family who where there-- sorry-- Our camera was accidentally left in the car which was parked four blocks away in subzero wind chills... so no, I didn't make my hubby go back for it-- I didn't want to get that "are you out of your mind?!" look:) But it was a beautiful wedding and reception at the Omni. We were also able to hook up with my brother, Steve and DIL Opal, their daughter Kristy, her husband Dean and meet their little guy Corbin. Our granddaughter Sophie got really excited (jumping up and down and smiling) when she saw Corbin- "another little one like me"! I will be posting about the Omni and the hotel where we stayed.

I am praying...for the people of Haiti and ones there helping--it is going to be a long process.

Around the house...Getting the house and guest rooms ready for the weekend--- laundry, and all that goes with it.

On my mind...Saturday was our first born son, Nathan's birthday! Didn't get to see him, but thought of him and the blizzardy (spellcheck is telling me that's not a word:) winter day that he was born. What a joy Nathan was as a boy growing up and still is to us! So proud of the kind and wonderful man he is today!

One of my favorite things... seeing all the little animal paw prints in the snow in our backyard. A lot of activity going on out there with the squirrels and bunnies!:)

A few plans for the rest of the week...getting groceries, cooking, baking, prep for Valentines Day, dealing with a bunch of snow-- and enjoying Missy and Jeff and the kids when they come!:)

For Today... January 18, 2010

Outside my window...Cloudy- they say that the sun might peek out this morning- we'll see... yesterday we woke to discover all the trees decorated beautifully with a coat of white. It didn't snow...but we had fog...it was frozen fog..so cool...literally:)

I am thinking... what a wonderful "birthday week" I've had! On Wednesday, my sweet husband took off half a day to be with me, and Nathan and Kristen brought dinner and spent the evening with us- so sweet:) On Sunday, Brooke,Tim, Jess and Daniel brought in lunch and we all got together again-( we missed having Kristen and Jonathan here-they had to work. And of course, Ben,Lisa, and Sophie are so far away). The girls and guys did everything- including cleanup- while I played with Sam and Eli! What a gift!!:)

I am thankful for... our sons and daughter and daughters-in-law who show us so much love. What a blessing they are!!

From the kitchen...there's one piece of birthday cake left that's calling my name today:)

I am wearing...jammies.

I am hoping...to get our tree down this week! Yes, it's still up:) - not lit, just up. But hey, Sam was DELIGHTED to see it when he came in the door yesterday!!That's enough for me. I joked with the kids that we'll leave it up and if the groundhog sees his shadow we'll keep it up for six more weeks:)--jk- take it easy ladies- I know some of you are freaking out out there;0) One thing you'll learn about me is that after raising six children, very little freaks me out:) okay except pulling teeth- never could do that!

I am hearing...the hum of the computer-- pretty quiet around here. Amanda is sleeping after a late night with her friends-MLK day today- so no classes.

I am remembering...how mom would make our favorite dinner and flavor of cake on our birthday each year. :) Thanks, Mom, for the great memories!

I am praying...for relief and safety for the people of Haiti. And for all the relief workers- thankful for their generous spirits and loving hearts.

Around the house...uh- taking the tree down:) and doing some sprucing up.

On my mind...what a great husband I have! So thankful for him.

For Today... January 11, 2010

Outside my window...It's about 19 degrees and headed for a high of 24 today- a bit of a heat wave for our area. By Sunday, they are predicting 40 degrees-- oh my goodness!

I am thinking... what a wonderful Christmas we had with all the kids and families here. I got very few pictures on Christmas morning because the camera was set on video when I turned it on, so I just kept it there while the grandkids opened some gifts. That used up most of the memory and no time to "dump" the pics onto the computer then-- so I'll have to rely on DsIL's photos this year:)

I am thankful for... our wonderful, warm house and all the provisions we are blessed with. In these cold days of winter, it makes one stop and think of all the really lovely basic things we have that make our lives so blessed! Thank you, Lord!

From the kitchen... I made breakfast for DH and Amanda this morning. It was nice sitting down with Amanda before she headed out for her first day back for her second semester of college. Did I mention that it's called "Spring" Semester?!!:)

I am wearing...yup, still in my jammies and robe.

I am hoping...and praying that things work out so that we can go to our nephew's wedding in Indiana at the end of this month.

I am hearing...a UPS truck start up the street after making a delivery.

I am remembering...that today is my brother, Wayne's birthday ! Happy Birthday Wayne!! We have shared January as our birthday month since I was 6 years old:) Wayne was born two days before my birthday when I was in first grade.
I've posted previously about how the nice maintenance lady at school, Gladys Ragan, smiled and showed interest in a little first grader's enthusiastic announcement that I had a new baby brother.
I probably remember that birthday, because my mom was in the hospital (for about a week back then for births). Our grandmother came and stayed with us. We didn't see Grandma McDonald very much, so it was also a week of getting to know her better. I remember it being a happy birthday- I got a toy xzlophone that Dad had bought at the hospital gift shop. I loved it! I also remember Dad and Grandma apologizing for the lopsided birthday cake- and Grandma chuckling about it being "held together with icing". :)
Looking back on it years later, I think that they were a little unsure of themselves- that everything would go okay for my birthday in Mom's absense. But I didn't mind. I had a gift and a cake, lots of love and a new baby brother- what more does a 6-year-old need?

I am praying...for all those in the southern states who are being hit with unusually cold weather. Water pipes and street crews are not prepared for subfreezing temps.

Around the house...Putting Christmas decorations away. And thinking of new decorating ideas for around the house. Seems like January is always a good month for that:)

On my mind...how thankful I am for students and adults who gave their time and talents for the TEC (Teens Encounter Christ) gathering over the weekend. Amanda always comes home feeling so blessed to have gone and served others in either coming to know Christ or having a deeper relationship with Him.

One of my favorite things... seeing a cardinal sitting on a snowy tree branch. Such a beautiful bright color!

For Today... December 14, 2009

Outside my window...About 30 degrees, cloudy, snow covered from our 16.8 inch blizzard last week. Overnight we got a coating of freezing rain over it all and they were saying on the radio earlier that driving and walking is treacherous out there. This gal is staying in today! So glad that Amanda's final is not until 5:00 this evening..

I am thinking...that a week from today Ben, Lisa and little Sophia will be here for lunch and I get to spend some time with that precious little granddaughter! - oh and Ben and Lisa, of course- Can't wait:)

I am thankful for... this time of year when Christmas brings to the limelight God's love for us in sending his Son, so we could go live with Him in eternity. And also the wonderful family gatherings that bind families together and make memories that last a lifetime.

From the kitchen... I am smelling the Dunkin Donuts coffee ( my favorite) that Amanda ground and brewed for us.

I am wearing...still in my jammies.

I am hoping...and praying for good weather and safe travel as Ben and Lisa drive from Pittsburgh (9-10 hr. trip) next weekend. They get to stay almost 2 weeks!

I am hearing...Amanda playing guitar from the living room. She's taking a break from studying for finals.

I am remembering...our son, Tim's birthday over the weekend. He turned 25. What an exciting year it has been for him- marrying the love of his life, Brooke.

I am praying...safe travel for all who are traveling on the slick roads today.

Around the house...Still decorating the house, starting some baking and any do-ahead projects that I can do.

On my mind...Amanda and Jonathan as they start their final exams and work on papers due for the end of the semester. Then so happy that they have almost a month off to recoup before next semester. And do you know that next semester is call Spring semester?!! Yay!:)

One of my favorite things... Christmas ornaments made by children and the sweet memories as they are put on the tree each year:)

This what our back yard looked like after 16.8 inches of snow fell overnight last Tuesday and into Wednesday morning. We were literally snowed in all day. The snow plows got to our street around 8:00pm.

This was a very heavy snow. And yes, it was very gray outside that day.

These are days we are thankful for a snow blower.

Everything was closed on Wednesday including many businesses and all non-essential government offices. The University of Wisconsin in Madison canceled classes for the first time in 19 years. You might have seen it on the national news of the 3000 student snowball fight that day- and kids using lunch trays as shields and for sliding down Baskom hill.

For Today... November 30, 2009

Outside my window... In the 40's with sunshine and clouds. Not bad for the last day of November!

I am thinking...of our son Daniel and DIL Jess and grandson Sam, who are home now with little Elijah Jeffrey, who was born on Saturday!! Kinda of tough weekend with Elijah in NICU with fluid in his lungs after birth. But he was able to come off oxygen yesterday afternoon and join them in his mommy's room last night.

I am thankful for... all of the prayers going up for Elijah and the family for Elijah's breathing problems. What a blessing to just put out the word and have so many praying!

I am also thankful for the wonderful time our family had gathering at Daniel and Jess' home on Thanksgiving. We enjoyed the food and just being together. We skyped with Ben, Lisa and Sophie in Pittsburgh, which was great! Daniel "walked" his laptop around for all the family to talk with them wherever they were sitting:) - so I am also thankful for all the technology in our lives that help us keep connected.

From the kitchen... uh- I don't even know. Most of the leftovers are gone, so I'm thinking hamburgers on the George Foreman grill for dinner:)

I am wearing...sweatshirt and my favorite stretchy pants.

I am hoping...to go visit Elijah (and Sam:)!

I am hearing... the going home traffic outside and the local evening news from the kitchen.

I am remembering...sweet memories of when our babies were born. And knowing the precious moments that Daniel and Jess are having now that they are home with Sam and little Elijah.

I am praying...a prayer of thanksgiving for all the wonderful doctors and NICU nurses who take loving care of these precious little ones everyday in hospitals across the nation. We do have the best in the world.

Around the house...Oh boy... We didn't get the tree up over the weekend, so all the Christmas decorating is yet to come. On Christmas day, all of our family will be here:) There are 15 of us now- including 3 grandkids --woohoo! (Two more grandkids and one more DIL since last year:) So exciting! What blessings!

On my mind...what a wonderful Lord we have! To able to immediately go to Him is such a comfort.! And what a wonderful community of praying believers that surrounds our family!

One of my favorite things... Christmas music playing on the stereo while decorating the house. And I so enjoy opening up the containers of decorations each year and memories of each one.

A few plans for the rest of the week...#1.seeing our new grandson:) #2,3.4,5,6- who cares?!:)

For Today... November 16, 2009

Outside my window... In the upper 40's with sunshine and clouds. The sunshine makes it a beautiful day.

I am thinking...that Thanksgiving is getting closer and I need to be ready to have dinner here just in case Sam's new little baby brother arrives a little earlier than expected...I don't know, I just have a feeling:) Otherwise, the family is gathering at Daniel and Jess's and bringing the meal to their house so we can all be together.

I am thankful for... wow- how to I count them all...for this country we live in- it's still the best place on earth! -- For liberty and freedom, for our family and their good health, for our homes... for God's provision. Thank you Lord...

From the kitchen... much grocery shopping needed- so still thinking:) I do have 13 cans of evaporated milk that hubby pulled from the back of a bottom cabinet that I hadn't seen in a few years quite awhile(who can squat down that far?-not this grammy anymore:)...probably bought them to go with the 5 or 6 containers of pumpkin pie spice that my sister found in another cabinet when she was looking for thyme ( oh the puns we had with that one- no thyme, out of thyme, where does the thyme go?,etc:) on a visit when she was here cooking. You know how it is? -- you're at the grocery store before Thanksgiving and can't remember if you have pumpkin pie spice or not, so you get it just in case...?...no?...several years in a row?...no?... Does anybody know the shelf life of a can of evaporated milk?...no expiration dates on them:)...anyway...I still need to get groceries:)

I am wearing...blue stretchy pants and blue sweatshirt and black socks- my comfiest working around the house outfit ever!:)

I am hoping...that I can talk my hubby into seeing the doctor this week about his bronchial cough. He gets it every year and this one is hanging on...ever try to talk a man into going to the doctor?:)

I am hearing... traffic outside starting to get busy for the afternoon...otherwise it's quiet around the house. Hubby has a day today using up banked vacation days that disappear at the end of the year if now used. Fortunately, he is resting because of his cough. And Amanda is napping after a late night studying last night and classes today. So shhhh:)

I am remembering...when we didn't have a vcr (they were fairly new)--and for the kids' birthdays we would rent a vcr and a movie on their birthday. Ask any of our kids what movie was our favorite?--The Apple Dumpling Gang (Disney-rated G)

I am remembering a picture we have of Jonathan (not yet scanned:( when he was about 4 -holding his choice of video up by his little cheek and smiling with excitement (and arm around the dog) for the camera. Jonathan just turned 22:)... sigh...

I am praying... a young blogging friend, Ashley, in Texas who is going through chemo for ovarian cancer and getting ready for more in-depth treatments in the next few weeks-- praying for successful treatments, and for permanent remission. If you would like to meet Ashley and add her to your prayer list, I'm sure that she would appreciate it. She is such a sweet young Christian woman who is trusting in the Lord through this difficult time in her life.

Around the house...Need to go down to the family room and go through things that Amanda purged out the bedroom that she now occupies. Ugh... She's finding that there are some perks to being the last sibling left at home--Your choice of room:)

On my mind...how nice it is have a sidewalk area repaired that hopefully helps heavy rains to flow away from the house instead of in the basement.

One of my favorite things... hearing from our grandkiddos' moms and days about new things they are doing...last week Sam was heard playing his little piano and singing "Amazing Grace" and Sophia is clapping her hands now. And seeing their beautiful little faces on their blogs- technology is great!

A few plans for the rest of the week...getting out to do a little shopping and hopefully a haircut and color- not that I have gray or anything;).

For Today... November 10, 2009 Good morning!

Outside my window...loving this weather! Sunny and in the 60's today:)

I am thinking... that I can't believe that we are this far into November already. I know it's probably going slow for Jess ;) - but our little grandson is due on the 28th!:) He'll be here before we know it!

I am thankful for... our children raising their babies to love the Lord from an early age. What a blessing!

From the kitchen...we brought "Burgoo" home from Illinois. Bought and frozen for us in September. Burgoo is a soup that is the center of annual community carnivals in central Ill. I'll take a picture of the next batch that we thaw and heat up:)

I am wearing...blue jeans, white shirt, black socks.

I am hoping...that this beautiful fall weather goes on and on! And for a short, mild winter:) Hey-- I can always hope:)

I am hearing... Fox News on tv from the kitchen, and kids playing across the street.

I am remembering...how good it was to go back home last weekend to visit Mom. It was nice to be there with her on the third anniversary of Dad's going to Heaven. She misses him so much- but time gone by helps. Thank you, Lord, for helping to heal our hearts when we lose loved ones...

I am praying... the families at Fort Hood and around the country affected by the shooting last week.

Around the house... looking to clear out and purge "mom stuff" from the under-the-stairs closed downstairs. It has become a dumping ground and things need to be given away or repurposed.

On my mind...outside projects that we are trying to finish before it gets cold and snowy.

One of my favorite things... my brother, Wayne's sense of humor...just makes me smile to think of him...:) Also, I just watched the video of my sister's wedding and saw again how Wayne stepped in and walked Missy down the aisle (not the original plan), when she was missing our dad and couldn't do it alone. Dad would have been proud - I know I was...such a sweet moment...

These are Vacation Bible School pins that my mom has collected through the years. These are from years that she has taught the preschoolers or served in the kitchen for VBS. A lot of those early years of VBS lasted for two weeks.


A life long friend of our family (and member of the church) made this beautiful case for Mom to keep them in. Before this was made, Mom pinned them on a styrofoam plate.
Ironically, the same company that supplied the VBS curriculum last summer ( and all previous years) did not offer pins this year.
Mom (at age 81) is now known as the "Cookie Lady" by the kids at VBS:)

What is one of your favorite memories of Vacation Bible School when you were a kid?
In my childhood, the ladies of the church also usually served the cookies on the day that they supplied homemade cookies. Delicious cookies and kool-aid were served outside on the front concrete area of the church-- Or, if it was raining, inside the entry foyer.
My husband has the belief that all VBS cookies must be homemade - because they are at the heart of wonderful childhood VBS memories. Give a child a homemade cookie and teach them about Jesus- that makes sense to me:)

For Today... October 26, 2009 Good morning!

Outside my window...we are still having gray skies with rain in the forecast. By the way, when I was in grade school, we were taught to spell it "g r e y ". I looked it up and found that the American spelling is g r a y- and the English (England) way in g r e y. So both are correct spellings.
One of the questions regarding this online was written: " I heard it can be grey or gray witch one is it,or is it both?" (Did you catch the misspelled word in this sentence?:)

I am thinking... that I function better when the sun is shining...

I am thankful for... healthy and happy grandchildren.

From the kitchen...making tacos for dinner and baking some apple pies today- gotta use up those apples.

I am wearing...still in my jammies and robe:)

I am hoping...that we have a mild winter like I read that we should have this year due to
El Niño.

I am hearing... a garbage truck gathering its load on our street. Our city now has these new-fangled trucks with a big hydralic arm that picks up our special garbage cans. The driver stays in the truck and and guides the arm to pick up the garbage can, bring it high up over the truck, and dump it into the back. Then it sets the can back down on our yard- really a pretty slick operation. It's actually pretty fun to watch:) And I'm sure it saves a lot of back problems for the employees!

I am remembering... when we were growing up--how much fun my dad used to have getting his kids to taste a persimmon that he had just plucked from our tree. We older kids ( who had already been through this mouth-puckering experience ) would stand quietly by to see their reaction. Have you ever tasted a persimmon? Some people like them- my dad did--not me:)

I am praying... for family and friends...

Around the house... working in the downstairs family room- the computer area needs major organizing.

On my mind...that I need to do more reading...

One of my favorite things... learning new things about my hubby's childhood:)

A few plans for the rest of the week...making more applesauce- lots more apples.

Pondering these words...to this song always inspires me and make me tear up when I think that several of our children (including DsIL) have been a witness for the Word on five continents and that the seed of the Gospel has been sown there through their witness of Christ's love.

For Today... October 20, 2009

Outside my window...the first of several predicted gray, rainy days for this week... thank goodness for that new roof!:)

I am thinking... what a great time we had with ALL of our family together (that's not easy getting everybody in one place:)- on Sunday for Sam and Kristen's birthday and of course visit with Ben, Lisa and little Sophia who made a long weekend visit from Pittsburgh.

I am thankful for...our new roof- seriously- I joke about it, but it is a blessing not to have to worry about leaks when it rains now or snows later...MUCH later. Also for the safe trip that Ben and Lisa had to WI and back home to PA last weekend- one long trip with a baby and doggy!:)

From the kitchen...going to have to be creative tonight-- need a grocery run, but no car here til later.

I am wearing...blue jeans, sweatshirt and black socks.

I am hoping... to get together with my friend Lori this week-it's been too long.

I am hearing... a tv (Martha Stewart) in the kitchen --and a neighbor's car outside.

I am remembering... how my grandpa would bring us walnuts from a farm he worked on-- and he would dump a bucket full out in our gravel driveway where my dad drove up to park the car.--The constant driving over them would get that touch outer layer off the shell. Then we would pick them up and store them in Mom's big country pantry, and shell them as needed for baking- especially at Christmas...

I am praying... a blogging friend, Ashley, who is going through a rough time right now. Also for a safe delivery for our little grandson in about 6 weeks. For Jess's final few weeks that are usually the most uncomfortable--and endurance for her as she keeps up with Sam each day.

Around the house... working on my closet and other projects this week.

On my mind...how much more exercise I need to get in each week--sigh...:/

A few plans for the rest of the week...keeping on with the reorganizing and sprucing up. I am wanting to leave some stuff off at GW and peruse the aisles while we're there for any treasures that might be sitting on their shelves;0) I should just ask them if they would consider an even exchange:)

For Today... October 12, 2009 Good morning!!:)

Outside my window...We are looking for a cloudy rainy day with the possibility of WHAT????-SNOW mixed in?????!!!!!

I am thinking... that the fact that almost all of the leaves blew off our tree in the front yard on Saturday morning- and most of them were still green!- and that fact that the high temps this week will be in the 40's is not a good sign for a pleasant fall. But I am not giving up!!!:)

I am thankful for...the lower bid (finally) from a roofer for our much needed new roof that is being put on Tuesday, and for the finances to pay for it- thank you Lord!

From the kitchen... for dinner tonight- barbequed chicken leg quarters, mashed potatoes, green beans. Also everything apple- from the apples from our tree:)

I am wearing... jammies and robe--it's 37 degrees this morning:/

I am hoping...for a good trip as Ben and Lisa take off for the 10-11 hour trip home with little Sophia on Wednesday night. That Sophia will be able to sleep while they are on the road.

I am hearing... early morning traffic as another week gets started. Silence in the house- no one else is up yet... a little while ago I heard a quick creaking sound from the attic area of the house- as the wood adjusts to the temperature changes.

I am praying... especially for protection for Jess who is due in Nov. from the H1N1 flu. And for a safe trip for Ben, Lisa and Sophia -- and than a sweet time for them with Lisa's family and ours.

Around the house... still working on sorting and purging in several rooms and the garage. And looking forward to our new roof. As they say- be thankful for the roof over our heads:)

On my mind...how I need to concentrate less on the News and more on the "Old Old Story"...

One of my favorite things...seeing my husband's face, hearing words of awe, as he looks at pictures of our grandchildren...talk about pride and joy...:)

A few plans for the rest of the week...keeping on with the reorganizing and sprucing up. On Saturday will be going to Milwaukee to celebrate Sam (2nd) and Kristen's birthdays. And getting ready for a family get-together here on Sunday.

For Today... October 6, 2009

Outside my window...It is cloudy, grey and wet outside. Rainy today, looking forward to seeing the sun tomorrow around here!

I am thinking... that I feel a little"bi-polar" after watching the Packer game last night with Brett Favre having a great game... for the Vikings--- something's wrong with the universe... :/ But I am lovin' and laughing at those Sears commercials with Brett...:) I am also thinking how fun it was having our sons Nathan and Tim hear last night to munch away and watch the game with their Dad and Amanda and me:)

I am thankful for...financial aid for Amanda's and Jonathan's college. And that all six of our children have been able to get a college education-- well we're still at it:)

From the kitchen... stir-fried chicken breasts with veggies.

I am wearing... jammies and robe-- toasty:)

I am hoping...for more sunshine this fall- so many grey days in a row now--- we get so many grey days during the winter, so just hoping for a bright, sunny fall:)

I am hearing... tires hitting wet pavement and a beep beep beep as some big equipment vehicle goes backward.

I am praying... and thanking God for answered prayers.

Around the house... we got things kinda torn up around here-- in the middle of sorting and purging from the garage to the bedrooms. Look out good will!:)
