Happy Groundhog Day!---Jimmy the Groundhog

Good morning!

Did you know that here in Wisconsin we have the Groundhog Capital of the World? Yes! We have a Groundhog Day breakfast after the official prognostication by Jimmy the Groundhog AND the annual Groundhog Ball!

JIMMY THE GROUNDHOG

MAYOR JOE, JIMMY, JIMMY'S KEEPER
Isn't Jimmy handsome in his tux?:)

Punxatawney Who?

This was on the local news this morning---Monday, February 2, 2009~

Jimmy the Groundhog predicts six more weeks of winter

SUN PRAIRIE (WKOW) -- Who needs Punxatawney Phil in Pennsylvania when we have Jimmy the Groundhog right here in Wisconsin?

Monday morning around 7:15 a.m., Jimmy saw his shadow and predicted six more weeks of winter.

But before the forecast, Sun Prairie's mayor, Joe Chase, joined us on Wake Up Wisconsin.

Watch Mayor Joe on WKOW 27 (copy & paste:)

That's right! Big doin's in Sun Prairie this morning. If you want all the latest info you can check out Groundhog Central. Yes! Groundhog Central! Sun Prairie has been celebrating Groundhog Day for 50 years now with a LIVE groundhog. (For many years in Pennsylvania, they used a stuffed groundhog- now how weird is that?)-Sorry Pennsylvania:)

One of the most interesting things I found on the website were these vintage envelopes.

The following envelope designs were Ira Bennett's artwork:

Here's a Groundhog's Day toast to you (from the website:)

A Groundhog Day Toast!

"May the sun shine gently
on your prairie,
and may your groundhog
never see his shadow." *

I love it:)) Have a great day!

Very interesting! I have never understood the big deal over a groundhog. How can they see their shadow with so many people standing around them? I really don't mind the extra weeks of winter, just as long as I know spring will come, as it always does! Thanks for sharing the information and the post cards were cute.

Great post. It made me think of that movie, Groundhog Day, with Bill Murray. I laughed so much watching that movie. Well, we had sun yesterday here, so I guess we are looking at 6 more weeks of winter too!

Hi Linda! I think this kind of stuff is just so cool! I love it when towns have events that everyone looks forward to; even the sillier ones! It has a way of bringing out the best in people and warms my heart. There is just something wonderful about some traditions, huh?
Love the postcards, too!!

Thank you Linda, for the kind comments on my blog. You're very sweet and I look forward to getting to know you better. :o)
Have a great Friday!!
Blessings,
Becky

I used some of this information to explain Groundhog's day to Elijah. Thanks for the help! It was funny that without ever hearing my feelings on the day, he commented, "Yay! Only 6 more weeks of winter!" :)

And let's plan on meeting sometime soon - maybe March will be warmer? We can certainly come out with Dan in the a.m. and then head your way - and we would love to do it!
